Quantitative Data
Each Friday, my students take a spelling assessment on the words they have studied for that week. In the beginning, I was giving the assessment as a whole group. By calling out four different group's words, the assessment was taking me over 45 minutes to give. The past couple of weeks I started having my aide give one group's test and then I would call back the other three groups one at a time to the back table. Without looking at the data, I thought my students were performing better by taking the spelling assessment at the back table. They were asking for less words to be repeated and appeared more focused during the assessment. However, I knew that these generalizations were not sufficient and decided to put my students' scores on a single sheet of paper for analysis. My analysis for the data can be seen in the following picture.
I am a little concern that all of my students were not scoring as well as they had the first week. After much thought, I am beginning to wonder if the students are having to work harder to learn their words since the words are in their developmental stage. I am going to keep this idea in the back of my head as I analyze more data. My last spelling assessment will be given this Friday. I am curious to see how my students perform due to the snow day today and not being able to work with their spelling word patterns...only time will tell.

That will be interesting to see if the snow day interferes with their spelling. I like the data you have here and it is a nice way for it all to be right there together so you can chart the students' progress.Maybe the words are just increasing in difficulty as well! I think you're doing a great job! Keep it up..we are almost there!!!
ReplyDeleteYes, I agree. I like the way you organized your data. It is easy to look at and compare week to week and student to student. What do your students do for spelling homework? Do they do it consistently, or could this play into how well they do on their tests too?
ReplyDeleteUnforunately, I had three students absent on Friday for the spelling tests and I student whose first day back at school for the week was on Friday. I will look at my other students' scores, but I do not think the snow played a huge impact on their scores since it was in the middle of the week. My students do not have homework on Monday night since they have only just been introduced to the words. On Tuesday my students put their words in ABC order, Wednesday is stairs or pyramid, and Thursday is practice test. I must admit after doing my literature review for my study, my activities are not well supported. However, I debated getting rid of spelling homework but I have too many parents that keep requesting it and homework was not part of my study. My students are extremely consistent about doing their homework. I only have two students who are inconsistent about homework on a daily basis. I have been thinking a lot about the homework and am probably going to change it drastically when the study is over. Luckily, the students are taking well to the activities being done throughout the day. Speed sort has to be their favorite!
